Cancer



Diagnosis of cancer can be shattering leaving the victim with the feeling that the end is near. It is like having a time bomb in the body not knowing when it will explode. But cancer does not always necessarily have to be fatal; so much depends on the grade (type of cancer and how dangerous it is) and stage (meaning whether it’s the beginning stage, intermediate or final) Even when your doctor advises that it is terminal, does not always necessarily mean that death is imminent. It does not always have to be hopeless.
In this article, we will discuss about what cancer really is and what causes cancer and more importantly what can you do about it.
No doubt, the initial shock of the diagnosis can be nerve shattering. But try to overcome it. After the initial shock, try to be calm because a confused mind will not help. The internet offers a wealth of information on the more appropriate and more effective type of conventional treatment and or alternative therapies for your condition. Creating a strong positive mental attitude can help a lot. Never, out of fear; rush into any treatment suggested by your doctors or specialist. They only know one type of treatment and that is invariably chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.

In another word, you have to take charge and although you cannot dispense with hospital’s treatments, you would also have to do your own research and understand the real meaning of cancer.
WHAT IS CANCER?
Cancer is a process within the body and it normally takes years for a tumour to develop. Cancer is therefore not a lump or a simple tumour! It is that process which was started by a weakening of the body and or the immune system to start with that can affect or infect the adjacent part of the body and unless properly addressed will eventually overtake or overcome one’s body.
The fundamental difference between a healthy tissue and a cancerous tissue is that healthy tissues respond well to adjacent or neighbouring tissues and undergoes apoptosis. When a cell does not respond to apoptosis meaning that it is not “obedient”, or does not comply with the rules of the programmed cellular system, other functioning of the cells become defective.
The cells are regulated by a system located in the pancreas. The pancreas excretes proteolytic enzymes which are the backbone of the immune system and the rest of the body. But our bodies also produce defective cells daily. Fortunately, such cells are destroyed by the pancreatic enzymes which in addition to killing off the defective cells are also used to digest foods. Simply put, cancer is therefore the failure of one’s pancreas to produce adequate enzymes and the failure of one’s body to deliver
Natural Fear of Cancer? The word cancer strikes fear in the heart of everybody. Having it is like having a time bomb in the human body. Even animals have it. It has been around for centuries but only during the second half of the 20th Century did we witness an explosion. But it is definitely on the rampage over the last few years of the 21st century. At least one out of every three persons in developed countries is a potential candidate for cancer. Contributing to this explosion are the enormous amount of stress, toxins, pollutants, processed foods that robbed them of their enzymes, electromagnetic stress, junk foods and prolonged use of certain types of prescribed medication that was not around a decade ago.
Cancer is not a mysterious disease that suddenly appears; it is a process (emphasis added) that takes many years to happen. It has definite causes and one can correct it if one has enough time and if one takes positive action to change the internal environment to one that creates health and not cancer while at the same time attacking cancerous cells by capitalising on their weaknesses.

The operation is a success! Time and again, we hear surgeons announcing that the operation is a "success". What is really meant is that the surgeon has "successfully" removed the tumour. Much of the time, the operation is always a "success" but the successful removal of a tumour or any tumour is no indication that the patient who is already weakened by the cancer and who will undergo weeks or months of either chemotherapy or radiation will survive or have a speedy recovery. The body continues to weaken by the onslaught of chemotherapy and the already battered immune system give way to more cancers that quickly spread to the other parts of the body. Second time around, the cancer usually bounce back with a vengeance, that is to say, it has already developed some sort of an immunity against the chemo drugs that was used in the first place. As a result stronger chemo- drugs have to be used and as a further consequence the human body cannot stand the further onslaught and finally give way. Most cancer patients die this way! Let’s ask if the "successful" removal of a tumour will in itself cure the cancer? To reiterate, cancer is a process and it is not confined to a tumour alone. The "successful" removal of a tumour therefore will not in itself solve the problem; on the other hand all forms of operations carry with it a certain degree of risks. In the first place, it involves cutting into deep tissues and is therefore invasive but what is important and pertinent to note that is surgery in itself could promote or increase the chance of further metastasis (spreading) and that is because there is no way the surgeon can prevent the cancerous cells within the tumour to spread into the blood stream once it is surgically cut.cancer_surgey
Unless the tumour obstructs or impedes the body's vital functions or disrupt the organ's functions, we would prefer to leave it alone. That remains our philosophy! We are not saying that surgery is not necessary. We are saying that until and unless absolutely necessary, we would prefer to leave it alone and that is also because after a major surgery, the body will be weakened further by the onslaught of a major operation. Consider this further. Conventional wisdom regards cancer as a tumour and continues to attack it with chemotherapy or radiation. When a tumour is reduced by 10%, conventional wisdom would regard it as a failure and continues to attack it with more chemotherapy. When the tumour is finally reduced by 50% in size and the patient dying, conventional wisdom would consider it a "success". On the other hand, if there is a reduction in size no matter how slight and there is a response, say 10% and so long as the patient remains generally healthy without any metastasis (spreading) and the size of the tumour contained, we would regard the treatment as a success. This accounts for the difference in approach and thinking.
breast_cancerSimilarly, let’s ask if total removal of a breast in breast cancer is the answer? To do so, we would have to go back to the root cause of the cancer. What causes the breast cancer in the first place? There are no hard and fast rules because many a times, it is necessary to have a mastectomy (total removal of the breast) and in certain cases a lumpectomy, a partial removal. We have our reservations about a total mastectomy or even a lumpectomy when the tumour is at zero stage or even Stage One, that is to say at its very earliest stage and that is because surgery at this earliest stage without addressing the root cause of the problem is not addressing the problem! Hyperthermia or some other less invasive therapies coupled with nutritional therapy may be the best solution at this very stage. On the other hand, surgery with follow up of chemotherapy and radiation will simply postpone the inevitable!
We are not saying that conventional methods such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy are useless when it comes to fighting cancer. On the contrary, chemotherapy and radiotherapy are often necessary to weaken the tumour or the cancer to enable the immune system to take over. Insofar as this is concerned, there is no hard and fast rule.

The ideal situation is to have a good hospital that practise the best in conventional and Chinese medicine and Nutritional Therapy. We know of many such good hospitals in China that would allow or encourage a patient to be on nutritional therapy in addition to conventional treatments.
Some recommended therapies include:
  •  immunotherapy and interventional therapy
  •  cryosurgery
  •  iodine seeds implantation
  •  gene therapy
  •  hyperthermia (sending deep heat into the tumour)
 The above routinely practiced in most cancer hospitals in China. These modalities are not unknown in the developed countries but they are not routinely practised because of political reasons. We also have to ask ourselves why they are not routinely practised or administered. Combined with the nutritional therapy that we practise on a regular basis and our extensive and practical knowledge, the patient's chance of a survival can be doubled if not trebled.

Lung Cancer

Lung Cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in both women and men in the United States and throughout the world. Lung cancer is the number one cause of cancer deaths in men and has surpassed breast cancer as the leading cause of cancer deaths in women. In the United States in 2004, 160,440 people were projected to die from lung cancer compared with a projected 127,210 deaths from colorectal, breast, and prostate cancer combined. Only about 14% of all people who develop lung cancer survive for 5 years.
Cancer occurs when normal cells undergo a transformation that causes them to grow and multiply without the normal controls. The cells form a mass or tumor that differs from the surrounding tissues from which it arises. Tumors are dangerous because they take oxygen, nutrients, and space from healthy cells.

Most lung tumors are malignant. This means that they invade and destroy the healthy tissues around them.

The tumors can also spread to nearby lymph nodes or through the bloodstream to other organs. This process is called metastasis.

When lung cancer metastasizes, the tumor in the lung is considered the primary tumor, and the tumors in other parts of the body are called secondary tumors or metastatic tumors.

Some lung tumors are metastatic from cancers elsewhere in the body. The lungs are a common site for metastasis. Lung cancers are usually divided into 2 groups that account for about 95% of all cases.

The division is based on the type of cells that make up the cancer.

The 2 types of lung cancer are classified based on the cell size of the tumor. They are called small cell lung cancer (SCLC) and non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). NSCLC includes several more types of tumors.

SCLCs are less common, but they grow more quickly and are more likely to metastasize than NSCLCs. Often, SCLCs have already spread to other parts of the body when the disease is diagnosed.

About 5% of lung cancers are of rare cell types, such as carcinoid tumor, lymphoma, or metastatic (cancers from other parts of the body that spread to the lungs). The specific types of primary lung cancers are as follows:

Adenocarcinoma (an NSCLC) is the most common type of lung cancer, making up 30-40% of all cases. A subtype of adenocarcinoma is called bronchoalveolar cell carcinoma, which creates a pneumonialike appearance on chest x-ray films.

Squamous cell carcinoma (an NSCLC) is the second most common type of lung cancer, making up about 30% of all lung cancers.

Large cell cancer makes up 10% of all cases.

SCLC makes up 20% of all cases.

Carcinoid Lung Cancer accounts for 1% of all cases.

Bronchiectasis


Bronchiectasis is a condition in which an area of the bronchial tubes is permanently and abnormally widened (dilated), with accompanying infection. 


The bronchial tubes are the networks of branching tubes which deliver air to the tiny sacs of the lungs (alveoli). In bronchiectasis, the diameter of the bronchi is unusually large. Examination of the walls of the bronchial tubes reveals destruction of the normal structural elements, with replacement by scar tissue. Pus collects within the bronchi, and the normal flow of oxygen into the lungs, and carbon dioxide out of the lungs (air exchange) is impaired. The bronchi show signs of inflammation, with swelling and invasion by a variety of immune cells. The inflamed areas show signs of increased growth of blood vessels. The area of the lung which should be served by a diseased bronchial tube is also prone to inflammation and infection.

Bronchiectasis - Causes and Symptoms

Prior to the widespread use of immunizations, bronchiectasis was often the result of a serious infection with either measles or whooping cough. Currently, viruses that cause influenza (flu) or influenza-like syndromes, as well as a number of bacteria may precede the development of bronchiectasis. Patients who have been infected with tuberculosis or the virus which causes AIDS (HIV or human immunodeficiency virus) also have an increased chance of bronchiectasis.

A number of pre-existing conditions may cause an individual to be more susceptible than normal to infection, with increased risk of bronchiectasis developing. These conditions include disorders of cilia, and immune disorders.

Cilia are the tiny hairs which usually line the bronchial tubes. Cilia wave constantly, sweeping the bronchial tubes clean of bacterial or viral invaders, and cleaning away excess secretions (mucus, sputum) which may be produced by the bronchi. When these cilia are abnormal or absent at birth, various bacterial or viral invaders may remain in the respiratory tract, multiply, and cause serious infections.

Immune disorders include decreased production of certain immune chemicals (immunoglobulins) which usually serve to fight off infection by bacterial or viral invasion. When these immunoglobulins are not produced in large enough quantity, bacterial and viral invaders are not effectively killed off, and infection occurs.

Other causes of bronchiectasis include an abnormally blocked (obstructed) airway. This can be due to tumor growth within the bronchial tube, or due to a child accidentally inhaling a small object which then blocks off the bronchial tube. People with the disease called cystic fibrosis (CF) often have their bronchial tubes obstructed by the thick, sticky mucus which is a hallmark of CF. Toxic exposures (breathing ammonia, for example) can harm the bronchi, and lead to bronchiectasis. An extreme allergic response of the immune system to the presence of certain fungi (especially one called Aspergillus) can also damage the bronchial tubes enough to result in bronchiectasis.

Symptoms of bronchiectasis include constant cough and the production of infected sputum (sputum is a mixture of mucus and pus), which may be bloody. In some cases, there may be wheezing and shortness of breath. The constant, low-level of infection may flare, resulting in increased production of sputum, worsening of the cough, and fever. The area of the lung served by the affected bronchial tube may become severely infected, resulting in pneumonia.

Bronchiectasis - Diagnosis

Chest x ray may reveal evidence of bronchiectasis, and CT scans are particularly good at revealing the thick, dilated bronchial walls of bronchiectasis. Sputum will need to be collected and cultured (grown in a laboratory dish), in order to examine it microscopically for the specific type of organism responsible for infection. A careful search for other underlying diseases is important, looking in particular for ciliary abnormalities, cystic fibrosis, or immunoglobulin deficiencies.

Bronchiectasis - Treatment

Treatment should involve efforts to resolve any underlying disorder. Infections will require antibiotics, obstruction may require the removal of a foreign object or tumor. Medications are available to help thin the sputum, so that it can be more effectively coughed up. Rhythmic clapping on the chest and back, while the patient assumes a number of positions (head down, primarily), may help the lungs to drain more effectively. This is called chest physical therapy, or percussion and postural drainage.

When a particular area of the lung is constantly and severely infected, surgery may be needed to remove it. When bleeding occurs from irritated bronchial tubes and overgrown bronchial blood vessels, surgery may be required either to remove an area of the bronchial tube, or to inject the bleeding blood vessel with a material to stop the bleeding.

In some patients, bronchiectasis eventually leads to a constantly low level of blood oxygen, despite other treatments. These patients usually have an associated increase in the size of the right side of their hearts, along with a decrease in the heart's ability to pump blood through the lungs. Some patients with extremely severe symptoms and disability have been treated with lung transplantation.

Bronchiectasis - Prognosis

Prognosis varies widely, depending on how widespread or focal the bronchiectasis, and the presence of other underlying disorders.

DISEASES AND DISORDERS - Respiratory System



The diseases and disorders of the respiratory system can affect any part of the respiratory tract and range from trivial to life-threatening. The nasal passages and pharynx, for example, are targets for the viruses that cause colds. These viruses infiltrate and destroy the cells of the nasal passage membranes. The immune system fights back by increasing blood flow to the area, bringing numerous virus-attacking white blood cells to the scene; this causes the membranes to swell, resulting in the stuffy nose associated with colds. Mucous secretions increase in response to the viral attack, creating the runny nose typical of colds. The infection can spread to the sinuses, the membrane-lined cavities in the head, as well as the lower respiratory tract and the middle ear.

Respiratory Distress Syndrome - DISEASES AND DISORDERS Respiratory System

Acute respiratory distress syndrome is one of two human diseases caused by hantavirus. Dust containing virus-infected rodent feces becomes airborne and is inhaled. The virus embeds in the lungs where the infection begins. Flulike symptoms appear in about a week, followed by the collection of fluid and white blood cells in the lungs, causing respiratory failure, then death.
The respiratory system is also subject to allergic reactions such as hay fever and asthma, brought about when the immune system is stimulated by pollen, dust, or other irritants. Hay fever is characterized by a runny nose, watery eyes, and sneezing. It usually occurs seasonally in response to abundant pollen in the air. In asthma, a person has difficulty breathing because the bronchi and bronchioles are temporarily constricted and inflamed. An asthma attack is typically mild, but can be severe enough to be life threatening.
Laryngitis, an inflammation of the larynx, is caused by a viral infection, irritants such as cigarette smoke, or by overuse of the voice. Laryngitis may cause hoarseness, or the voice may be reduced to a whisper until the inflammation subsides. Bronchitis is an inflammation of the membranes that line the bronchi or bronchioles. Bronchitis results from viral or bacterial infection or from irritating chemicals. Infections caused by bacteria or viruses can lead to pneumonia, a potentially serious condition of the lungs in which fluid and inflammation builds up in the alveoli, impeding the flow of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the capillaries and the alveoli.
Tuberculosis is caused by a bacterium that attacks the lungs and sometimes other body tissues as well. If infections in the lungs are left untreated, the disease destroys lung tissue. In the past, antibiotics have controlled tuberculosis, but recently, new antibiotic-resistant strains of the tuberculosis bacterium have evolved. These new strains now pose a significant public health problem.
In emphysema the alveolar tissue is partially destroyed and the remaining alveoli are weakened and enlarge. The bronchioles collapse on exhalation, trapping air in the alveoli. Over time this process impairs the ability to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide with the circulatory system, leading to breathing difficulties. A noncontagious disease, emphysema results from multiple factors, including a genetic predisposition to the condition, smog, cigarette smoke, and infection.
Lung cancer develops in individuals with a genetic predisposition to the disease who are exposed to cancer-causing agents, such as tobacco smoke, asbestos, and uranium. Cancerous tumors may start in the bronchi, bronchioles, or in the alveolar lung tissue. If lung cancer is detected before the cancer has spread to other parts of the body, treatments are more effective, and the prognosis for full recovery is good. Unfortunately, 85 percent of lung cancer cases are diagnosed after the cancer has spread, and for these cases, the prognosis is very poor.
Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS) is the name for a cluster of symptoms that indicate severe malfunctioning of the lungs. In infants, RDS is termed Infant Respiratory Distress Syndrome (IRDS). Commonly found in premature infants, IRDS results when the alveoli fail to fully expand during inhalation. Expansion of the alveoli requires a chemical called surfactant, but in many premature infants, the alveoli are not developed enough to produce this vital substance. IRDS is treated by administering air and surfactant through a breathing tube until the alveoli begin producing surfactant on their own. Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) results when lungs are severely injured, for example, in an automobile accident, by poisonous gases, or as a response to inflammation in the lungs. ARDS is a life-threatening condition with a survival rate of about 50 percent.

People like junk food as it is readily available always. People think that junk food digest faster than the usual traditional food. But the junk food has also got drawbacks. Following are the 5 major reasons that why one should avoid the junk food:-

Heart diseases heart diseases

Junk food results in many heart diseases such as cardiac arrest, atherosclerosis and myocardial infraction. The reason that junk food causes these diseases is that junk food contain excess amount of lipoproteins and cholesterol. The lipoproteins and cholesterol deposit on inner linings of blood vessels. So, this results in formation of plaques. And for this reason heart need to put extra effort to pump the blood through the arteries. Junk food also contains excess amount of sugar and salts which result in increased blood pressure.

Liver failure

Liver failure is also due to same reason. The presence of cholesterol and salts in junk food result in liver failure.

Lack of energy

Junk food contains harmful carbohydrates, cholesterol and fats. So, the body having junk food does not get required nutrients and it lack energy.

Diabetes

Junk food ingredients are also harmful in the way that they damage the pancreas and result in IDDM (Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus).

Poor concentration

Due to excess of oil and fat in the junk food it makes difficult for the body to digest it. So to digest this all body utilizes more enzymes and blood. Person feels drowsy and has less concentration because major portion of blood is diverted to intestine.

Despite new health study suggestive that the inject diabetes drug LANTUS that power boost cancer risk and U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday urge patients who are on medicine to persist use it. And the three of four studies available most recent Friday in DIABETOLOGIA show a possible link between LANTUS and better risks for a variety of tumor type.

But, “the duration of patient follow-up in all four studies was shorter than what is generally considered necessary to evaluate for cancer risk from drug exposure,” the FDA said in its first comment on the issue. “Further, inconsistencies in findings within and across individual studies raise concerns as to whether an association between the use of insulin glargine and cancer truly exists.”

“Based on the currently available data, the FDA recommends that patients should not stop taking their insulin therapy without consulting a physician, since uncontrolled blood sugar levels can have both immediate and long-term serious adverse effects,” the agency wrote.

And “For patients using glargine and considering switching to another form of insulin, the data in these studies make it unclear as to whether any one type of insulin increases the risk of cancer more than other types of insulin,” the ADA said.

“Patients concerned about these studies or their insulin regimen should talk to their doctor and should not stop taking their insulin on the basis of the findings reported here.”

And the FDA says it “encourages both health care professionals and patients to report side effects from the use of insulin glargine to the FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting Program.”

Liver (hepatocellular) cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide. Between 500,000 and 650,000 new cases will be diagnosed each year. In the United States, the incidence of liver cancer is estimated to be between 10,000 and 15,000 cases per year. It is also rising, both in the United States. For those patients who have incurable, generally fatal diseases, their best chance of success lies in receiving treatment at a center of excellence. This premise is even more attractive if they have a somewhat rare/uncommon disease (in Western countries) such as liver cancer (hepatocellular cancer). Due to the fragmented, multi-payer, insurance dominated health care system that exists in the United States, patients are unable to receive care that is at the cutting edge of what science and clinical research can potentially provide them.
